MINI SERIES: COLLAGEN #5

#5 In Salon Collagen Treatments

There are various in-salon treatments that therapists can offer their clients to increase collagen levels naturally. Environ' Collagen Power Facial. is a peptide-packed treatment that boosts collagen, softens fine lines and tightens lax skin. Gentle sound waves and pulsed iontophoresis are used to drive a special nutrient-packed serum deep into the skin to give a plumper, more radiant appearance.

Environ Skincare Treatment

Collagen Stimulation Therapy
The most effective treatment salons can offer is Collagen Stimulation Therapy. which harnesses the body's natural powers of healing to smooth the skin and achieve incredible results, pioneered by Environ' Founder Or Des Fernandes. Collagen Stimulation Therapy (CST) can stimulate collagen production and tighten skin. It combines micro-needling with topical vitamin skincare and involves thousands of tiny needle pricks to the skin. The resultant bleeding initiates the release of platelets which in turn release a cascade of growth factors. This is what stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in a tighter, smoother and younger looking skin. One of the key growth factors released (TGF 83) is normally only found in foetal tissue and is responsible for initiating scar-less healing and regenerating skin.

MINI SERIES: HORMONES - THE EFFECTS ON SKIN AT EACH STAGE OF LIFE #5

FIFTIES - SKIN & THE MENOPAUSE

The menopause usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age. It follows the perimenopause stage and is when menstrual periods stop and fertility ends. Menopause symptoms include hot flushes, insomnia, and weight gain, loss of sex drive, mood swings, depression and changes

to the appearance of the skin. A rather irritating symptom is also unwanted facial hair. Some women often find hairs appearing on their chin or Jaw line, which is caused by a drop in oestrogen and rise in testosterone levels. It is also during this time that women may opt for treatment to relieve some of the many symptoms of the menopause such as BHRT (Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy).

"Bio-identical hormones are exactly similar in molecular structure (i.e, identical) to the hormones that your ovaries and adrenal glands secrete into your bloodstream. They are produced in the laboratory from plants, usually yam or soya" - Dr Yehudi Gordon (Consultant Gynaecologist)

WHAT ARE TYPICAL MENOPAUSE SKIN CHANGES?

1. Change in fat deposits

Oestrogen deficiency during menopause causes a change in body composition with an increase in abdominal fat. This contributes to metabolic syndrome which increases the risk of cardiac disease and diabetes. Facial fat becomes thinner resulting in loss of volume.

2. Wrinkles

Wrinkles will become more prominent as your skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity.

3. Hyperpigmentation/ Age Spots

Melanocytes, which are the cells that manufacture the pigment melanin, are also controlled by oestrogens. As menopause kicks in, melanocytes levels decline. As melanin decreases, areas of the skin become lighter and therefore more susceptible to sun damage.

4. Sun Damage

Years of sun exposure can results in solar lentigines. These brown 'age spots' may start to appear on the face, neck, hands, arms and chest. Age spots can look flat with a black, brown or even grey colour. However, often at times these age spots may have a similar appearance to some skin cancers. Therefore, as a precaution, if your client is concerned with very dark spots or spots that one that looks blotchy or are increasing in size, it is best to advise them to visit their GP.

5. Dry Skin

Dry skin happens as your skin ages because it fails to produce natural oils partly due to a decrease in hormone production. Seasonal changes also affect menopause skin changes. However on the contrary, some women may experience oily skin with the decline in oestrogen.

USEFUL TIPS FOR COPING WITH THE MENOPAUSE

1. Use SPF cream wiih antioxidants - a winning combination for menopausal skin changes.

2 Eliminate scrubs, harsh cleansers and facial brushes which strip the skin of natural oils and disrupt the stratum corneum promoting transepidermal water loss.

3. Use a hydrating oil based cleanser that removes environmental pollutants from the skin whilst maintaining the natural acid balance of the skin.

4. Introduce key active ingredients such as vitamin A and C orally and topically, along with antioxidants to protect the skin against the damaging effects of free radicals. Vitamin A thickens the skin, whilst stimulating natural moisturising factors, Vitamin C will support collagen production and help generate healthy skin cells.

5. Introduce a good quality omega 3 and 6 supplement to compensate for the decline in oils and nutrients.

6. Supplement with bio-identical hormones which will reduce or eliminate the symptoms of the menopause. Combined with lifestyle and dietary changes this can mean staying vital, strong and healthy (physically and mentally) as we go through the menopause and beyond.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion in the Spotlight

You may have seen the TV adverts for the Skinbase Microdermabrasion Facial (if not, we've added a youtube link below)

A little about Microdermabrasion first;

"A non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation, regular exfoliation with MD does wonders for a dull and lacklustre complexion. To get the most out of your at-home skincare products you need to remove old build up before anti-ageing creams and serums can really penetrate and take effect. Microdermabrasion treatment does this by using tiny crystals to slough away old skin cells, clear blocked pores and polish the face.
An immediate improvement can be seen after treatment. MD is a firm celebrity favourite, New York City dermatologist David Colbert, M.D., who treats Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz, says: “When HDTV kicked in, it became our most sought-after pre-awards show procedure, we had to open a second office!”. (source: Glamour magazine) Exfoliation with MD provides a great base for an even application of makeup.
Mineral makeup can even be applied straight after treatment. MD has also been proven to enhance the barrier function of the skin resulting in increased hydration. (source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/)"

Skinbase Microdermabrasion Facial - As seen on TV

Skinbase Microdermabrasion

Ever wondered what Microdermabrasion (MD) can do for you?

Skinbase Microdermabrasion
The secret to glowing skin
The Secret to Glowing Skin - A non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation, regular exfoliation with MD does wonders for a dull and lacklustre complexion. Skinbase Microdermabrasion
How does Microdermabrasion work?
What is Microdermabrasion? - Microdermabrasion (MD) is a chemical free, non-invasive treatment that uses ultra fine micro-crystals to exfoliate the skin and remove impurities. SkinBase MD achieves amazing results revealing younger, healthier looking skin from the very first treatment. With each subsequent treatment, the intensity of the microdermabrasion can be increased – reaching deeper layers and successfully removing acne scarring, lifting pigmentation and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.

4 Simple Steps - CONSULTATION : CLEANSE : TREAT AND TARGET : MOISTURISE WITH SPF
Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Who is Microdermabrasion for?
Who's It For? - With numerous benefits to the skin microdermabrasion treatment is great for anyone. MD improves the overall appearance of the skin giving it a healthy glow and youthful appearance. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, even sensitive skin. As an anti-ageing treatment we recommend it from age 28 and up. The treatment is also very effective at treating a number of skin issues which can occur at any time of life and to any skin type. For problematic skin such as acne scarring, stretch marks or pigmentation all age groups can benefit and see an improvement with a course of SkinBase MD treatment.
Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Skin problems that can be treated
What Skin Problems Can Be Treated? -
Acne and Acne Scarring: Microdermabrasion works by removing the top layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface making it particularly effective in treating acne. Eliminating dead skin cells unclogs pores and minimises sebum production reducing the chance of new spots developing.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles, Ageing Skin: As we age elastin and collagen production starts to slow down. The vacuum action of the microdermabrasion treatment works to stimulate blood flow, promoting elastin and collagen production. The combination of collagen stimulation and increased skin renewal will improve the condition of the skin’s surface smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
Dull and Tired Skin, Uneven Skin Tone, Dry and Dehydrated Skin: Normally skin renews itself approximately every 28 days. By removing the dead cells from the top layer of the epidermis, microdermabrasion speeds up the rate at which skin replenishes to reveal new, fresh skin and a radiant glow.
Cellulite ‘orange peel effect’: Microdermabrasion can’t cure cellulite however it will stimulate the circulation improving blood flow to the area. To improve the appearance of cellulite make sure you drink plenty of water and exercise regularly.
Pigmentation and Blemishes, Stretch Marks: Microdermabrasion can vastly improve the appearance of pigmentation and stretch marks. The microdermabrasion treatment promotes a ‘lifting and smoothing’ effect, improving skin condition and diminishing the appearance of stretch marks and discolouration.

Questions and Answers
Questions 1 -
How often should I have a treatment? Treatments should ideally be carried out every 7-10
days. This will ensure the MD exfoliation reaches deeper layers of the skin and allow acne scarring to be removed, pigmentation lifted and fine lines smoothed. SkinBase MD is progressive rather than aggressive, so skin layers are gently removed over a course of treatments carried out at regular intervals.
How many sessions will I need? This will vary depending on your skin’s condition. MD is a fantastic one-off exfoliating treatment and it’s also great for treating problematic skin issues such as acne, pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment for skin problems require between 5-20 treatments depending on their extent and the skin concern to be treated. Please get in touch and we will be able to complete a full consultation and offer a recommended treatment plan based on your needs.
How does it feel? Is it painful? No, not at all, in fact most people find it quite relaxing. You will feel the suction and the sensation of the crystals on your skin. This will be a pleasant experience when performed correctly by our qualified and trained therapists.
Can I wear makeup straight away? We advise not to wear makeup for at least 12 hours after treatment. However mineral makeup can be used as this allows the skin to breathe.
How long will the results will last for? Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment and as such should be carried out regularly. Skin is continually renewing itself and this happens approximately every 28 days. MD provides a deep exfoliation to remove build up and old skin and so your skin will continue to benefit from regular MD treatment after a completed course. Results achieved for skin problems such as pigmentation and acne/acne scarring can be maintained by protecting the skin from UV rays and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle alongside MD maintenance treatments.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Good for men too!
Questions 2 -
Can my son / husband have the treatment, and when would they shave? Yes of course, SkinBase microdermabrasion is great for men too. MD treatment can help treat stubble rash and ingrown hairs by removing skin build up around the follicle. Although not essential, male clients should shave the night before a morning treatment and in the morning before an afternoon treatment. Dry, shaven and clean skin allows the micro-crystals to reach the skin surface unobstructed.
Will it make my facial veins worse? Microdermabrasion can’t be used to treat broken capillaries or thread veins, if they are mild and in a small area then we will simply avoid them. If the area affected is quite large then we would advise against microdermabrasion.
Can I have the treatment in the summer months? Yes you can still have MD treatments in the summer months. A high SPF should be used after and between treatments all year round, this is especially important in the summer months as MD exfoliation will make it vulnerable to UVA and UVB rays. Where possible we
recommend you avoid exposing your skin to direct sun. We don’t want you undoing all our hard work!

I’ve got sensitive skin can I have this treatment? Aluminium oxide crystals are an inert compound and as such this means reactions are extremely rare even with the most sensitive skin. For added peace of mind we can perform the treatment on a low pressure setting to allow the skin to acclimatize.
Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Crystal, Diamond, or Orbital?
Questions and Answers 3 -
What are the crystals made of? The crystals are made of Aluminium oxide a naturally occurring mineral. It is an inert compound that resists reaction with other materials making it a very safe option and also what makes it particularly suitable for even the most sensitive skin.
Aluminium is a metal isn’t it? Yes aluminium is a metal. Did you know Calcium and Sodium are also metals?
But when combined with other elements they become something quite different, and something to eat even! Calcium and oxygen becomes chalk or marble. Sodium and chlorine becomes Salt. Aluminium and oxygen becomes Corundum (MD crystals), Sapphires or Rubies. Aluminium oxide is also used in toothpaste, dental cements and as a dispersing food additive (so we eat it every day!).

What’s the difference between crystal, diamond and orbital microdermabrasion? Diamond and orbital microdermabrasion use an abrasive pad/tip of synthetic diamond to exfoliate the skin whereas SkinBase MD uses a stream of tiny aluminium oxide crystals to exfoliate. If you look under a microscope you will see that
the crystals are irregularly shaped which makes them very effective at abrading skin as they can reach into the little nooks and crannies of the skin without damage to the skin surface. We believe that crystal is the best choice for your skin; more gentle yet more effective. Crystal microdermabrasion has been around much longer and so there has been more research into its effectiveness. Some NHS doctors use the SkinBase machine because aluminium oxide is still considered the safest and best for results within the medical community.

Testimonials
Client Testimonials;
“I can’t begin to describe what this treatment’s done for me, my skin feels absolutely great and I feel great. I feel really confident now.”
Lynne Colclough

“It’s making me look outside, how I feel inside. I feel really good actually, feel fantastic. Quite surprised by the positive effects. The results of the treatment have been fantastic, and I didn’t think it would be that beneficial to me so if I found that, then lots of other people are going to get even better results, so I would definitely recommend it.”
Rachel Dodd

“To say it was a shock to get melasma at just 24 is an understatement. My confidence dropped significantly and I became fixated that people were looking at the pigmentation on my forehead. After just four treatments there was a really big difference and now after six it’s completely gone.”
Hannah Slater

“I’d had bad skin since I can remember, I exacerbated the problem by piling on make up and generally picking at breakouts. People who have never suffered from bad skin don’t realise how debilitating it can be. After spending hundreds of pounds on make up, I was desperate to find a solution that worked. The SkinBase Facials™ have made such a vast improvement to my skin that wearing foundation has for the first time in many years become a choice rather than a necessity, I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that the treatments have made such a huge improvement to my skin. I feel amazing.”
Angela Wainwright

“I’ve had acne scarring for years and had come to accept that my skin would never look or feel smooth. I decided to try The SkinBase Facial™ following a long list of failed treatments, I really didn’t know what to expect. I came for treatment for my acne and, the results were fantastic, the deep scars had visibly reduced and the overall feel and look of my skin was much smoother. Unexpectedly I also noticed a real improvement with the lines on my forehead.”

£10 Off All Microdermabrasion Treatments Thoughout May

Microdermabrasion is a system of intense exfoliation and resurfacing using ultra fine crystals that rejuvenate the skin. The crystals work as a gentle abrasive on the skin to remove dead skin cells layer by layer. The irregular shape of the crystals helps to work on hard to reach areas without any damage to the skin. The vacuum action of the machine stimulates the circulation and promotes increased blood flow to the area. The production of collagen and elastin is stimulated, which results in a firmer, more youthful looking skin.

Skye Blue Beauty of Burton on Trent are giving a £10 discount on all Microderm treatments during May 2015.
