The Rise of Concern Based Skincare

The Rise of Concern Based Skincare

SKINCARE GETS PERSONAL

As skincare professionals, we see clients seeking treatments for skin concerns such as Acne, Rosacea, Pigmentation, Dry, Sensitive or Fine Lines/Wrinkles on a daily basis. Research from the British Skin Foundation has found that 60% of British people currently suffer from or have suffered from a skin condition at some point during their lifetime.

Skin Condition
British People Suffer From Skin Condition

When it comes to skincare efficacy, a 'one size fits all' approach is no longer enough. Discerning clients armed with more information via the internet, reality programmes and social commentary, want to treat specific skin concerns to benefit from skincare regimes tailored to meet their personal needs

SKIN CONCERN? WHAT SKIN CONCERN?

When looking at skin concerns, it appears that overall, both men and women are paying more attention to the 'what' and the 'how to resolve if. A recent study of 92 dermatology clinics found a 200% rise in the number of adults seeking specialist Acne treatment'. Other skin conditions on the
ise include Rosacea and Pigmentation. Rosacea treatment enquiries are up by 92%, double compared to the year before. Hyperpigmentation, caused by the overproduction of Melanin resulting in darker patches on the skin, can not only make skin look uneven but can also give the appearance of aged skin.

Acne Treatment
Rise In Adults Seeking Acne Treatment

What has caused this rise in skin concerns? Note: a few modern day factors that have huge impact

DIET - SUGAR AND PROCESSED FOODS

Diets high in sugar, lacking nutrients and full of processed foods can lead to a host of adverse health issues, including heart disease, weight gain and also skin problems. Yet, as a nation, we are consuming more sugar and processed foods than ever before. The World Health Organisation has stated that people should aim to get just 5% of their daily calories from sugary foods. However, the average is 12.3% for adults under 65 according to the national diet and nutrition survey (NONS). Sugar can trigger a spike in blood sugar levels. This increases levels of insulin that can cause skin problems such as acne and rosacea. In fact, an overview of research carried out over the past 50 years has found that eating foods with a high glycaemic index (GI) not only aggravated acne, but in some cases triggered it, too",

HORMONES AND STRESS FACTORS

A survey of 4,000 people ' found that four out of five adults feel stressed during a typical week, while almost one in ten were stressed all the time. There is now a greater understanding of the link between stress and adverse effects on skin health. For example, stress hormones trigger overproduction of sebum that can create or worsen Acne. Raised levels of stress hormones promote transepidermal water loss resulting in dry and dull skin appearance. While in general. hormonal imbalances can play havoc on the health of skin whether caused by stress or other factors such as PMS, pregnancy, puberty and menopause.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Daily exposure to free radicals, including pollution, UVA/UBA rays can also lead to various skin issues. Air pollution can lead to premature ageing by accelerating wrinkles and age spots, according to emerging scientific research'. Clients reporting sun damage is also very common. Although more than eight out of 10 people are worried about skin cancer, 72% have been sunburnt in the past year".
UVA rays are particularly dangerous because they don't cause burning, so there's no immediate sign that any damage is being done. In fact, the tell-tale pigmentation marks, excessive wrinkles and leathery texture often don't become apparent until many years later

2018 - STAND AND DELIVER. THE MOVE TO 21ST CENTURY SKIN CARE

Personalised and information based skincare is the future. Providing a consultative approach enables client confidence and loyalty through a longer term treatment programme. Therapists should be taking a three pronged approach when treating their clients:

1.       Start with a detailed skin analysis, in order to really understand the client's skin. Use skin imaging technology and take photos regularly to show progress.
Discuss and design a personalised treatment programme - the #100DayReset programme is ideal for both new and existing clients. Combine professional treatments with a personalised homecare routine to address the client's concern.

2.       Treat from within. Skin nourished from the inside looks healthy on the outside. Clients who use appropriate supplements are likely to achieve far superior results.

3.       Use topical treatments that are about efficacy and integrity.
Topical vitamin treatments that contain vitamin A have shown to make a dramatic difference to skin concerns.

If clients are using the wrong kind of make-up it could undo all the hard work. Encourage the use of non-comedogenic cosmetics to avoid aggravating concerns. Remember, mineral make-up, such as Jane Iredale, is the best kind for clients with problematic skin as it allows the skin to breathe.

Don't worry about discussing your skin issues with a professional skincare expert, we are here to help and support you, to get your skin in its best possible condition.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion in the Spotlight

You may have seen the TV adverts for the Skinbase Microdermabrasion Facial (if not, we've added a youtube link below)

A little about Microdermabrasion first;

"A non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation, regular exfoliation with MD does wonders for a dull and lacklustre complexion. To get the most out of your at-home skincare products you need to remove old build up before anti-ageing creams and serums can really penetrate and take effect. Microdermabrasion treatment does this by using tiny crystals to slough away old skin cells, clear blocked pores and polish the face.
An immediate improvement can be seen after treatment. MD is a firm celebrity favourite, New York City dermatologist David Colbert, M.D., who treats Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz, says: “When HDTV kicked in, it became our most sought-after pre-awards show procedure, we had to open a second office!”. (source: Glamour magazine) Exfoliation with MD provides a great base for an even application of makeup.
Mineral makeup can even be applied straight after treatment. MD has also been proven to enhance the barrier function of the skin resulting in increased hydration. (source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/)"

And of course you can get this great treatment in our Burton Salon - Visit http://www.skyebluebeauty.net/Microderm.htm for more details.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion Facial - As seen on TV

Skinbase Microdermabrasion

Ever wondered what Microdermabrasion (MD) can do for you?

Skinbase Microdermabrasion
The secret to glowing skin
The Secret to Glowing Skin - A non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation, regular exfoliation with MD does wonders for a dull and lacklustre complexion. Skinbase Microdermabrasion
How does Microdermabrasion work?
What is Microdermabrasion? - Microdermabrasion (MD) is a chemical free, non-invasive treatment that uses ultra fine micro-crystals to exfoliate the skin and remove impurities. SkinBase MD achieves amazing results revealing younger, healthier looking skin from the very first treatment. With each subsequent treatment, the intensity of the microdermabrasion can be increased – reaching deeper layers and successfully removing acne scarring, lifting pigmentation and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Who is Microdermabrasion for?
Who's It For? - With numerous benefits to the skin microdermabrasion treatment is great for anyone. MD improves the overall appearance of the skin giving it a healthy glow and youthful appearance. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, even sensitive skin. As an anti-ageing treatment we recommend it from age 28 and up. The treatment is also very effective at treating a number of skin issues which can occur at any time of life and to any skin type. For problematic skin such as acne scarring, stretch marks or pigmentation all age groups can benefit and see an improvement with a course of SkinBase MD treatment.
Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Skin problems that can be treated
What Skin Problems Can Be Treated? -
Acne and Acne Scarring: Microdermabrasion works by removing the top layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface making it particularly effective in treating acne. Eliminating dead skin cells unclogs pores and minimises sebum production reducing the chance of new spots developing.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles, Ageing Skin: As we age elastin and collagen production starts to slow down. The vacuum action of the microdermabrasion treatment works to stimulate blood flow, promoting elastin and collagen production. The combination of collagen stimulation and increased skin renewal will improve the condition of the skin’s surface smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
Dull and Tired Skin, Uneven Skin Tone, Dry and Dehydrated Skin: Normally skin renews itself approximately every 28 days. By removing the dead cells from the top layer of the epidermis, microdermabrasion speeds up the rate at which skin replenishes to reveal new, fresh skin and a radiant glow.
Cellulite ‘orange peel effect’: Microdermabrasion can’t cure cellulite however it will stimulate the circulation improving blood flow to the area. To improve the appearance of cellulite make sure you drink plenty of water and exercise regularly.
Pigmentation and Blemishes, Stretch Marks: Microdermabrasion can vastly improve the appearance of pigmentation and stretch marks. The microdermabrasion treatment promotes a ‘lifting and smoothing’ effect, improving skin condition and diminishing the appearance of stretch marks and discolouration.

Questions and Answers
Questions 1 -
How often should I have a treatment? Treatments should ideally be carried out every 7-10
days. This will ensure the MD exfoliation reaches deeper layers of the skin and allow acne scarring to be removed, pigmentation lifted and fine lines smoothed. SkinBase MD is progressive rather than aggressive, so skin layers are gently removed over a course of treatments carried out at regular intervals.
How many sessions will I need? This will vary depending on your skin’s condition. MD is a fantastic one-off exfoliating treatment and it’s also great for treating problematic skin issues such as acne, pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment for skin problems require between 5-20 treatments depending on their extent and the skin concern to be treated. Please get in touch and we will be able to complete a full consultation and offer a recommended treatment plan based on your needs.
How does it feel? Is it painful? No, not at all, in fact most people find it quite relaxing. You will feel the suction and the sensation of the crystals on your skin. This will be a pleasant experience when performed correctly by our qualified and trained therapists.
Can I wear makeup straight away? We advise not to wear makeup for at least 12 hours after treatment. However mineral makeup can be used as this allows the skin to breathe.
How long will the results will last for? Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment and as such should be carried out regularly. Skin is continually renewing itself and this happens approximately every 28 days. MD provides a deep exfoliation to remove build up and old skin and so your skin will continue to benefit from regular MD treatment after a completed course. Results achieved for skin problems such as pigmentation and acne/acne scarring can be maintained by protecting the skin from UV rays and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle alongside MD maintenance treatments.

Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Good for men too!
Questions 2 -
Can my son / husband have the treatment, and when would they shave? Yes of course, SkinBase microdermabrasion is great for men too. MD treatment can help treat stubble rash and ingrown hairs by removing skin build up around the follicle. Although not essential, male clients should shave the night before a morning treatment and in the morning before an afternoon treatment. Dry, shaven and clean skin allows the micro-crystals to reach the skin surface unobstructed.
Will it make my facial veins worse? Microdermabrasion can’t be used to treat broken capillaries or thread veins, if they are mild and in a small area then we will simply avoid them. If the area affected is quite large then we would advise against microdermabrasion.
Can I have the treatment in the summer months? Yes you can still have MD treatments in the summer months. A high SPF should be used after and between treatments all year round, this is especially important in the summer months as MD exfoliation will make it vulnerable to UVA and UVB rays. Where possible we
recommend you avoid exposing your skin to direct sun. We don’t want you undoing all our hard work!

I’ve got sensitive skin can I have this treatment? Aluminium oxide crystals are an inert compound and as such this means reactions are extremely rare even with the most sensitive skin. For added peace of mind we can perform the treatment on a low pressure setting to allow the skin to acclimatize.
Skinbase Microdermabrasion
Crystal, Diamond, or Orbital?
Questions and Answers 3 -
What are the crystals made of? The crystals are made of Aluminium oxide a naturally occurring mineral. It is an inert compound that resists reaction with other materials making it a very safe option and also what makes it particularly suitable for even the most sensitive skin.
Aluminium is a metal isn’t it? Yes aluminium is a metal. Did you know Calcium and Sodium are also metals?
But when combined with other elements they become something quite different, and something to eat even! Calcium and oxygen becomes chalk or marble. Sodium and chlorine becomes Salt. Aluminium and oxygen becomes Corundum (MD crystals), Sapphires or Rubies. Aluminium oxide is also used in toothpaste, dental cements and as a dispersing food additive (so we eat it every day!).

What’s the difference between crystal, diamond and orbital microdermabrasion? Diamond and orbital microdermabrasion use an abrasive pad/tip of synthetic diamond to exfoliate the skin whereas SkinBase MD uses a stream of tiny aluminium oxide crystals to exfoliate. If you look under a microscope you will see that
the crystals are irregularly shaped which makes them very effective at abrading skin as they can reach into the little nooks and crannies of the skin without damage to the skin surface. We believe that crystal is the best choice for your skin; more gentle yet more effective. Crystal microdermabrasion has been around much longer and so there has been more research into its effectiveness. Some NHS doctors use the SkinBase machine because aluminium oxide is still considered the safest and best for results within the medical community.

Testimonials
Client Testimonials;
“I can’t begin to describe what this treatment’s done for me, my skin feels absolutely great and I feel great. I feel really confident now.”
Lynne Colclough

“It’s making me look outside, how I feel inside. I feel really good actually, feel fantastic. Quite surprised by the positive effects. The results of the treatment have been fantastic, and I didn’t think it would be that beneficial to me so if I found that, then lots of other people are going to get even better results, so I would definitely recommend it.”
Rachel Dodd

“To say it was a shock to get melasma at just 24 is an understatement. My confidence dropped significantly and I became fixated that people were looking at the pigmentation on my forehead. After just four treatments there was a really big difference and now after six it’s completely gone.”
Hannah Slater

“I’d had bad skin since I can remember, I exacerbated the problem by piling on make up and generally picking at breakouts. People who have never suffered from bad skin don’t realise how debilitating it can be. After spending hundreds of pounds on make up, I was desperate to find a solution that worked. The SkinBase Facials™ have made such a vast improvement to my skin that wearing foundation has for the first time in many years become a choice rather than a necessity, I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that the treatments have made such a huge improvement to my skin. I feel amazing.”
Angela Wainwright

“I’ve had acne scarring for years and had come to accept that my skin would never look or feel smooth. I decided to try The SkinBase Facial™ following a long list of failed treatments, I really didn’t know what to expect. I came for treatment for my acne and, the results were fantastic, the deep scars had visibly reduced and the overall feel and look of my skin was much smoother. Unexpectedly I also noticed a real improvement with the lines on my forehead.”
